The AI Cure-All Fallacy: Why Human Nature Matters Most
The notion that artificial intelligence (AI) will soon “cure all diseases” is a widespread claim perpetuated by prominent figures such as Dario Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic, and Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google DeepMind. However, this sweeping assertion overlooks the significant role human choices and behaviors play in chronic disease development.
While AI can accelerate drug discovery and provide personalized guidance for healthy living, it cannot single-handedly eradicate diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease within a decade or two. The potential for medical breakthroughs exists, as AI excels at analyzing vast amounts of data and identifying patterns. Nevertheless, the idea that AI will suddenly eliminate these complex conditions is overly optimistic.
Cardiologist Dr. Eric Topol notes that there are currently no cures for common diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease. Thinking that new drugs will emerge to “change everything” in the next five to ten years sets unrealistic expectations for AI. Dr. Catherine Young, a Senior Fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, emphasizes that cancer is not one disease but over 200 distinct conditions, each with its unique causes and biology.
The hype surrounding AI’s potential in healthcare is not new. In 2000, Francis Collins predicted that we would be able to prevent or cure most cases of major diseases within 20-25 years. Yet, here we are, 26 years later, facing a growing epidemic of chronic diseases. This highlights the “magic wand” assumption: that AI can somehow magically fix complex human problems.
The real challenge lies not in developing better machines but in improving humans. If we put all our bets on technology, neglecting to develop ourselves, this will be “very bad news” for humanity.
