In his latest Truth Social outburst, President Donald Trump lashed out at what he claims are “vandals” responsible for damage to the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. However, his ire is misplaced, as his administration’s own construction mistakes have been blamed for the problems.

The Kennedy Center, a performing arts venue he has taken to renaming in his own honor, is at the center of another controversy. A federal judge will soon decide whether the Trump-dominated board of directors overstepped its bounds by approving an inscription praising the president’s renovation efforts despite a court order blocking such changes. Trump responded by blaming the judge for being “highly conflicted” and accusing the Kennedy Center of losing money due to his own lack of involvement.

This pattern is not new: whenever one of Trump’s pet projects hits a snag, he shifts the blame onto others – whether it’s the courts, the opposition party, or in this case, “vandals”. His attacks on Judge Katherine Holmes Babineau are particularly telling. By labeling her decision as evidence of her own bias, Trump is attempting to delegitimize any criticism of his actions and undermine the rule of law.

Trump has a long history of overestimating his own abilities – particularly when it comes to construction projects. The Reflecting Pool was refinished at a cost of around $53 million in 2021, but administration officials have since admitted that poor construction led to the damage, not “vandals”. This is just the latest in a string of high-profile failures: from his disastrous attempt to build a wall along the US-Mexico border to his half-finished renovation of the Lincoln Memorial.

Trump’s behavior suggests he views even minor setbacks as personal attacks, rather than opportunities for growth or improvement.
