The recent flurry of activity around subsea cable systems in the Gulf region is less about building new infrastructure and more about escaping existing chokepoints. Europe-Asia data traffic has long been funneled through a narrow corridor of cables and fibre networks converging at the Red Sea and Suez Canal region, making it vulnerable to disruption.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are racing to build alternative routes that bypass these chokepoints altogether. The most ambitious project is Ooredoo’s Fibre in the Gulf (FIG) system, a 2,000-kilometer network due for completion in late 2027. By linking all six GCC states and Iraq while avoiding the Suez Canal and Bab-el-Mandeb strait, FIG promises to reduce reliance on vulnerable cables.

However, building new routes is only half the battle. A key section of FIG will pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a region notorious for its security risks. Ooredoo’s CEO Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo acknowledges that his team currently cannot get cable-laying ships inside the strait, posing a significant challenge to the project’s viability.
