Corals in Decline Globally, Nearly Half a Century of Data Shows

Corals provide vital ecosystem services that support an estimated 25% of marine life, including coastal protection and economies around the world. They also contribute significantly to the livelihoods of over 100 countries. The report’s authors call for sustained funding and standardizing monitoring methods to better understand the global picture of reefs.
However, as Manuel González Rivero points out, the root cause of the coral decline is clear: our continued addiction to fossil fuels is driving climate change, which in turn drives the warming of oceans. This warming is having a devastating impact on corals, leaving them weakened and vulnerable to disease.
Recent research published in Science suggests that El Niño events may be getting worse, with stronger events over the last 40 years compared to a time before 1850. By studying the geochemistry of corals in the Galápagos, Julia Cole’s team found evidence of this trend.
